Another Plane Crash in Russia

INTERNATIONAL: A short-range transport aircraft, carrying a group of parachute jumpers, has crashed in the Russian region of Tatarstan, killing 16 people and severely injuring 6 others. The plane, which came down near the city of Menzelinsky, had been carrying 20 parachutists and two crew members. It is the third Russian plane crash in as many months. According to Russian media, the plane was built in 1987 and was owned by the government-linked “Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation and Navy”. The head of the organisation’s regional branch says that the parachuting club that operated the flight was very experienced, but the state-run Cosmonaut Training Facility has suspended its ties with the aeroclub pending an investigation. Local authorities believe one of the engines could have failed. Russian aviation safety standards have been tightened in recent years but accidents continue to happen, particularly in remote regions. An ageing Antonov-26 transport plane crashed in Russia’s far east last month killing six people. In July, all 28 people on board an Antonov twin-engine turboprop died in a crash in Kamchatka.

Officials Survive Assassination Attempt in Yemen

A car bomb targeting the governor's convoy has rocked the Yemeni southern port city of Aden. At least six people have been killed and seven others wounded, one of them a child. A military spokesman says Governor Ahmed Lamlas and Agriculture Minister Salem al-Suqatri, both survived what is being called a "terrorist assassination attempt". Lamlas is secretary general of the STC, which has vied with the Saudi-backed government for control of Aden and Yemen's wider south. STC has also seen infighting among its ranks. The government and the STC are nominal allies under a coalition led by Saudi Arabia, which has been battling the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Riyadh had brokered a deal to end the power struggle, but tensions remain. Instability in the south is complicating UN-led peace efforts to end the war in Yemen. It has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and left 80% of the population reliant on aid. The government is based in the south while the Houthis control most of the north.

And…more buildings near the volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma have been engulfed by rivers of red-hot lava, intensified by the spectacle of flashes of lightning. Footage shows trees and buildings on fire as dawn broke, with jets of lava erupting from the volcano and flowing down what remains of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. It has already destroyed nearly 1,150 buildings and engulfed 480 hectares of land. About 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.
